Your body needs the right care after surgery to ensure a healthy recovery. Be sure to check out the information below on how to make a full recovery after your medical procedure so you can get back to your life faster and without worry.
Stay Active and Rest Well
One of the most important things you can do after any medical procedure is to stay active within your body’s limitations. While taking it easy is important, your body isn’t meant to stay sedentary longer than necessary. Staying active helps you maintain a healthy weight and physique, and will also keep your body flexible and mobile. Remember that it is essential to rest your body adequately after physical exercise to help promote the healing process. Talk to your physician and medical care providers to find out what sort of exercises will be best for your recovery.
Eat and Drink Properly
The building blocks of your body are the water you drink and the foods you eat, so be sure to give your body the best fuel possible to help it during the healing process. Eat a well-balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and protein, and try to avoid takeout or fast food meals. Be sure to drink plenty of water to maintain good hydration, as your body cannot function—or heal—very well when it’s lacking water.
Attend Follow-Up and Physical Therapy
Even after your surgery is complete and you leave the medical center, it’s important to maintain communication with your doctor. Do not skip follow-up appointments, as your doctor needs to stay informed about your condition and progress to make sure that you’re healing as you should. Be sure to attend physical therapy if it’s recommended to ensure that your body heals and strengthens without complications or loss of motion.

If you have diabetes, it’s imperative that you understand how to maintain a healthy, nourishing diet. It’s not just that eating the wrong thing could result in a late-night trip to the emergency room; it’s that getting the right nutrients is essential for good health. Here are some tips for planning a healthy diet as a person with diabetes:
Eat sweets sparingly. Having diabetes doesn’t mean that you have to cut sugar out of your diet altogether. The trick is to eat small serving sizes in order to control your intake of carbohydrates; instead of devouring a bag of jelly beans, for instance, have a small slice of your favorite pie after dinner.
Eat three meals a day. Eating regular meals is one of the secrets to eating healthy meals. Try to stick to a regular schedule, and include your diabetes medicine—if you take one—as part of the schedule. Keep mealtimes about 3-5 hours apart, and be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day, which will help you digest your food properly.
Eat plenty of fiber-rich foods. Most people eat much less fiber than they should. Eating foods that are high in fiber—including apples, broccoli, spinach, beans, tortillas, and whole grain bread—will help you get your essential daily percentage of about 25-35 grams.
Learn to read food labels. When you’re at the grocery store, take the time to read the ingredients—and nutritional facts such as calories and cholesterol content—on each product before you buy it. You’d be surprised how many seemingly innocuous foods include enormous amounts of sugar and fat.
